It's unusual but I dig it. I feel it encourages webmasters to interact more between each other. Most normal visitors wont even see these interactions I think.

I use Nearly Free Speech myself, and that's been about $1.50 a month for my site's ~250MB (scales with resource use). Definitely requires good knowledge of SSH/rsync/other remote file management software though; no GUI file dashboard.
Have't noticed any slowness issues. They actually just upgraded servers and distributed them more to reduce any issues there, too.
never used github but I (personally) think most people should probably just move their site host rather than be a supporter on nc if they're looking for more benefits.
tried looking into glitch and they tempoarily disabled the feature since march of this year...well there goes the two hosts i knew off the top of my head. time to do so digging or just give up
