ohh i feel this in many ways. you nailed how the “no surf”/internet abstinence/digital detox movement’s primary goal is still to be more productive and maximize shareholder value 😑 there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism, as long as we try as much to consume mindfully, boycott whenever we can, not replace consumption with even more consumption, we are already doing our best. i also like how you go very +
deeply into analysing the different motivations behind digital minimalism and appreciate your honesty about how one step in the wrong direction can lead us down undesirable rabbit holes. so sorry if this is incoherent or rambly, i just relate to this so much… look forward to more as always reyn:-)
hi reyn !! i loved reading your thoughts on digital minimalism. it's been a journey for me to try and find an alternative to spotify as well... i have a cd collection which is nice but no cd player in my car (where i mostly listen to lyrical music) 😔 i've used soundcloud but ultimately decided it's not for me.... also !! i wanted to recommend japanese rock band toe to you and the latest sunset rollercoaster album ✨
obsidian really is a ‘put it together’ app (i say as i also have begun using it for more weird things like a whole wiki for my genshin characters to know What i have without needing to get on), but at least due to its age its got a decent amount of templates that just need wading through over complicated garbage to find
@limovars this is so affirming to hear, thank you so much :') i've been finding success with loosely applying minimalism's core philosophy of being intentional with the things you consume/introduce to your life, before hustle culture bastardized it! no worries about coherence/rambling, i love when people comment :) thank you for reading
@fearoffun we are god's strongest musicless soldiers :') i love my CDs but i like being able to shuffle/listen to multiple artists in one sitting, so maybe i should digitize them into one big mixtape or playlist.... thank you so much for the recs, i love toe!! immaculate taste. i didn't know sunset rollercoaster released a new album, i gotta get on that asap! thank you for reading <3
@zhongvie i'm slowly beginning to appreciate obsidian and how granular its features are! i'm sorry if i slighted you with my complaints about the kinds of tutorials available, the one you recommended did help me understand obsidian's logic and i appreciate it a lot :') if you have any templates you like that make using obsidian easier, i'd love to pick your thoughts! thank you for reading :)
any sort of business/productivity book is an infohazard to me... disconnecting yourself from big tech is a worthwhile goal, they have always been wolves in sheep's clothing.
@daliwali the amount of times i've been shilled shit like "how to win friends and influence people," "48 laws of power," and "the subtle art of not giving a fuck".... fucked up. i'm already finding a lot of benefits from removing a decent amount of big tech from my life and it's genuinely nice to reclaim some elements of control over my digital life. thank you for reading!
sooo real, i feel like self help books are very much a product of capitalist individualism, they centre themselves on how you the person can best learn to navigate life under the capitalist structure rather than questioning the cause of the decay. i dont think everybody who reads self-help/improvement books is annoying, but the most annoying people you will ever meet will swear by the very same wellness slop books!!
@mekongred you put it so well, yes exactly! i wish there were more accessible reading materials for those that are burnt out and disillusioned, because there are definitely plenty of resources out there that explain the nature of capitalist disillusionment but of course that's not typically where someone would look if they don't know they're struggling under capitalism in the first place!
new blog post :)
