i think the reason is that as a social network, neocities is (currently) broken. I do 100% believe in the power of personal websites. But there's an asymmetry: Site authors can express themselves deeply and readers get a very intimate look at someone... but the inverse is not true. So authors (at least me) end up feeling lonely or smth. i have 46,000 hits but it feels like nothing. not like im connecting with someone
