okay so! i have been using rednote as of late, it being basically chinese instagram, and i've noticed that chinese ppl still use words like "netizen" and phrases like "global internet village", having read a lot of old 90s internet zines, I can confirm that these terms were associated with the early internet idealism in the west, but fell out of favor for terms like 'user' or 'content creator'.
omg you and me both! i really like rednotes' layout, it reminds me of one site that i was active on when i was a tween back from 2011. it was shut down due to the creator no longer being able to host. the phrasing could be from how china is socialist and thus seeing the internet more for what it is or shouldve been when first created (ignoring the fact what became the internet was originally for US military use)!
feel free to suggest!
