One of the things about the old web (at least, that period of time when forums were THE THING, instead of social media like facebook, twitter, myspace, etc...), it was a lot easier to make friends over the internet because the forums created a social /and/ creative place to be. On the right forums you could share your webpages, post your creations and discuss things. It did help that the forums were usually based

around a subject (say, pets) or a fandom (like Star Wars, which would sometimes also attract other fandoms in similar genres.) It's harder now to find those communities. Social media at best has created a monoculture, and at worst a place for trolls and bullies to get upset
because you aren't 'the same' as they.
