Ah, another excellent page from you! I agree that all five of the principles listed are important, and must be brought back for the Web -- as well as for the Internet as a whole -- to return to its old glory days.

Another important point, which is discussed in the "Freedom of Speech" subsection and which could possibly stand on its own as a sixth principle, was the clear separation between the real world and cyberspace, with the latter having its own distinct culture and customs. The online world was also taken far less seriously than the real world, and hence the culture was looser and freer.

Thank you very much for your kind, words @grafovolaverunt!

Thank you for your praise, @lolwut! I agree with you about the sixth principle, and had originally planned to devote more time to it and a few other things, but decided to kick myself under the table to keep readers from becoming bored. I do miss the old days of crazy Internet drama where everyone involved knew it was just a silly online diversion and not something to be up in arms about.

I can only imagine the absurd IRL consequences people would be facing if the drama we all regularly got into on IRC 15-20 years ago had happened in the modern age.

Very nice. I have only two things to point out: (1) regarding the not_found.html page, it should be mentioned that the file must be placed in your site's root directory (i.e., the same directory in which the index.html file is located); and (2) currently I don't see any bold font marking any sections of this article.

DANGIT! Thank you so much for pointing that out, lolwut! I was frantically working to finish this article off before work in the morning and did not have time to glance at it in Neocities. Lamentably, I had updated a CSS file to add subheadings the day prior, and completely forgotten to upload the new version of that file. Very sorry, everyone. I will do my best to avoid repeating this embarrassing error.

Thank you for your comments overall, lolwut. I updated the not_found.html part. I definitely should have been more specific, especially considering the article is aimed to be understood by newbies/laypeople.

I've never played Neopets but having looked at some screenshots of its maps, I am grateful that you made that comparison! And yeah, some of the stories linked in the Haunted House are serious nightmare fuel. F*** Oranges is a good one if you like goofy and not very scary horror.

Has anyone else experienced mysteriously "unfollowing" any accounts lately? Has happened to me with three people so far and I'm getting paranoid here. I know I get drunk and hit the wrong buttons or misclick sometimes, but the same specific thing three separate times?!

I think it happens when they put their profile to private so when you click on their user name it goes to their site instead of the user profile, but it doesn't act like facebook - if someone unfollows you, you should still be following them if you've not unfollowed. It is strange, though. I don't interact a lot on here, but when a follower disappears, I wonder if I've upset them with something I've put on my site(s)

but can't imagine why it would cause upset since I tend to avoid politics and don't post about sensitive issues on there.

@bright-eyes Thank you for your insight! That is very strange. The only times I've (consciously) unfollowed anyone is when I realised their website has been abandoned for many months.

Now that's what I call some serious JPEG compression.

'Tis the wonders of saving files as JPEG 2000 files then resaving as JPEGs, and converting to Indexed colours. For some reason I'm really nostalgic for those bygone goofy AF sites full of compressed recolours of DBZ screenshots.

@holeinmyheart Thank you, my friend. I wanted some "gimmick" to break up the monotony of all the text. I'm very happy that you liked it.

I apologize for unfollowing you (?). Could've sworn I was following you, so I'm not sure if Neocities glitched or I hit the wrong button while drunk at some point.
