My only experience with virtual pets was with a CD rom software called Aquazone Desktop Life. You might be mistaken to assume it's a glorified screensaver software from the 90s but it's legitimately a fish tank simulator where you have to feed your fish daily and watch water parameters or else your fish will catch diesases and die. There's honestly nothing like it that I know of in recent memory that's close to that.
