i'm trying to get started w/ RSS too! i've seen quietRSS recommended in a few places, so i just downloaded it and added a few feeds. it does everything i need it to do, i think? no complaints so far :)
oops, two hours later and i just realized that it's quiteRSS, not quietRSS
