I'm reminded of a theory I read a long time ago that proposed all the events leading to the first world war were manufactured by the british crown precisely so there would be continued conflict between continental Europe nations, since the railroads that began sprawling all over Europe were connecting/opening new markets which would leave the british empire unable to compete.
