Does anyone know how to make the images load faster? Or is this just the price one has to pay for having a layout primarily based on images...

usually compressing them will help, especially with gifs. pngs are also bulkier than jpgs, so when possible, use jpg.
That would explain a lot, my site is filled with gifs!!! thank you so much :DDD
