I think it's because my mind is algebraic from the base level. In addition, when I see p(x,y)=0 and q(x,y)=0, I also see p(x,y)*q(x,y)=0, p(x,y)=q(x,y)=0 and a*p(x,y)+b*q(x,y)=0 too. But if I write them as y=mx+n, I can't see those images. So it feels very unnatural.
