Aw, it's a shame you didn't enjoy Madame Bovary. Gustave Flaubert is one of the great masters of prose - I find his writing to be so exquisitely and carefully wrought, even in translation, that reading my favorite passages moves me to a state bordering on mania. It's always interesting to see how others experience ones favorite works! I think your frustration with the characters is a common one!
(continue) but I suppose to me it was very similar to reading Greek tragedies - it's a kind of inevitable process towards something awful resulting from a character's (or multiple characters') hamartia. I look forward to reading more of your reviews! :D
