If you are hesitant to solder in a mod chip, you could always try a softmod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggpm-thuaTY This would work on the PSOne. It requires some way to write an image to a memory card though, like a PS2, a PC adapter, etc. I hope the classes go well!
