I wasn't sure if you were open to comments, but I was really touched by your writing here. I have less severe but similar childhood memories that have shifted my relationship with objects to 99% utility and 1% sentimentality. It is indeed comforting to know that I'm not alone in what my family deems an austere way of living.
I can relate to this! Re: the article you linked to, I also find that this essay correctly identifies some problems and solutions for groups with unspoken norms, especially ones that formulate themselves as a "community" or "family" https://www.jofreeman.com/joreen/tyranny.htm
you've really made me reconsider no face as a character with this! spirited away (along with the other ghibli movies) are some of my favorites, and i really enjoyed this in depth look and personal analysis of no face's character. i am also really glad you made it out of that workplace, and i hope to read more of your writings in the future :D
Thank you for the link hotelpaintings--I enjoyed my first read through it and will be chewing on it for awhile. Roccie--thank you for your kind words, I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed it! :) Also, Studio Ghibli movies are some of my favorites too.
