A lot of people view consciousness as an emergent property of the brain, but what does that really mean? What is emergence really? There are two types of emergence we have to consider: weak emergence and strong emergence. Weak emergence is your everyday emergence like how a song is composed of simpler tones or how computer parts operate from simpler hardware parts. Strong emergence on the other hand is just magic.

Fantastic read, really interesting. If you don't mind I will follow up because this stuff is so fun to think about. :)

Woah making a custom markup language for a website is intense. I like your art style! Followed.

Thank you! (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶) I like your website's design a lot as well. About metka (the markup language), it is very barebones (though I may extend it in the future) - roughly around 300 lines of C - the general idea being that it gives you some simple "commands" that get transformed into HTML structures. I have tried Pandoc in the past, but found it really slow on my older PCs lol

And this is the shell script that generates the entire site: https://codeberg.org/vihmu/site/src/branch/main/build.sh

Thank you!! I will have to read your reviews of the CS Lewis books you've read- I plan on getting into his work myself as soon as possible~

Nice site! I'm curious what's the technology that powers the simulations for your research? I'm assuming you're ssh-ing into some shared compute and editing something?

Thanks! I mainly run GPU accelerated simulations. Some people run massively parallel simulations on CPU research clusters (e.g. Archer 2). However accessing GPU clusters is expensive and difficult (you need a large budget) and funders tend to prioritise AI related work. With my limited budget then I run my simulations on two desktop GPU workstations which works well enough for up-to several hundred thousand particles

Very cool! I once worked on a simulation project and I can relate to the pain of having to wait for computations to finish xD

New book review: Mere Christianity by C.S Lewis. I liked it. What Lewis book should I read next? :)

I also read the Abolition of Man btw so no need to recommend it. I'll review it some day...

I'm enjoying reading through the Narnia series atm. They are Children's books but well worth reading if you haven't before. The problem of pain is interesting too
