clark backrooms reminds me of troy from FENCES in that to me he embodies a particular kind of black hypermasculinity where a man is conditioned to believe the only value he has, the only way he can connect with his family emotionally, and as a result the only thing he owes said family is his ability to materially provide for them.

having been deprived of positive examples or healthy communication in his youth, he feels affronted when it is offered to him and even more affronted when others expect him to offer the same.
