this series is the cutest thing i've seen. what a rollout. also insert that gif of the person looking sadly out the window as it rains

changed the GREAT BOOKS LIST to the BALCKWELL CANON. implemented a THREE-TIERED SYSTEM which makes it more clear why certain books are on the list -- generally made it a bit more personal and hopefully more interesting... but in the end, it is just a big list of books

new feature: AUTHOR OVERVIEWS, in which i write a little about each of an author's books (that i've read), trying to find connections and generally outline the trajectory of their writings. starting with one of my favourites, NATSUME SOSEKI. this will likely be continually updated as i read more of this works.

i'm curious how you'll feel about sanshiro when you get to it. imo it has some of the best atmosphere of his books. after i read it, i realized this was where a lot of modern japanese media's imagination of turn-of-the-century japan came from

new essay: THE WEATHER IS GOING TO GET COLD SOON... in which i rediscover a long-lost anime from my past

i always feel strangely guilty when i forget the contents of books/movies/animation i claim to be formative, as though i'm supposed to retain encyclopedic knowledge of everything that's ever moved me. you're right though, forgetting allows us to re-experience where we came from with a fresh mind, and in the process have that wonderful feeling called "remembering", something akin to Plato's conception of amamnesis

> Maybe I could create a website that disables the user’s browser in such a way where they can’t leave my domain until they’ve visited every page for as many minutes as it takes to read the text on screen. If only they knew what was on here… they couldn’t help but love it…

this energy is impeccable. i often feel that way. but you can’t force good taste on someone, i’ve learned. plus then the people who engage with your writing will really really vibe with you.

for what it’s worth i think your website design is perfectly respectable

thank you; i appreciate that. when i'm in a bad mood i often get mad about the design of my website, for some reason. looking at it in the light of day, i agree that it's perfectly respectable, and i daresay i even like it.
