I reached 1000 updates quickly because I used the neocities command line tool and I also use Hugo as a static site generator with my own theme I made from scratch

Why do you link to a page with the image instead of just linking to "/IMG/squirtle.jpg"?
Because that way you can make the image not stretch/deform using CSS
