Just wanted to say that I think your writing about the original Animal Crossing is spot on. None of the sequels come even close to the original in terms of atmosphere and unique gameplay. I think you are right to point out the limitations as the reason why it works so good. It is often that through limitations and dealing with them creatively that you get the most magical results.

I know I'm a bit late responding to you sorry. Thank you so much for posting this!! And yes! AC feels like a game made under Oulipo-level constraints, but that's absolutely why it is magical.
