As for the anime world, if you're interested, in one of my older articles ("Nothing Matters, But Fandom Spaces Are Just a Detail") I describe a bit more in detail why I think things are the way they are, and why they are not like they used to be, at least in terms of our online lives.
I actually went through and read a few of your blog posts before I commented. I very much agree with what you pointed out. I spent a lot lf my time on Forums back in the day. I think you made a great point about how people were expected to 'play nice' or be banned from a space. It hadn't occurred to me until I read that, that this is why online toxicity had gotten so out of hand these days.
