I'd like to take a note on JPEG images that you tend not to mention here. This image format got support in web browsers just a bit later than GIF. While GIF is more for images with little amount of colours, JPEG addresses photos and images alike with lots of colours and gradients. Also, Netscape 3.0 appears to be trying to decode Progressive JPEG on-the-fly!
