That's your problem - I can't blame you for not getting into it if the Force Awakens was your introduction. When I wrote "by this I mean the six proper films" I excluded the force awakens.
Rogue one is quite good considering its a new film.
But I would say two paths are best:
Story order (Episode 1, 2, 3 (the prequels), rouge 1, episodes 4 , 5, 6 (original trilogy)
Or release order to get the authentic experience (4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3)
