I've been thinking about what you've written for a bit. I don't know how people are where you live, so maybe I'm being naive, but I found it's easier if you make the first step and rip the band aid off. My situation is a little different than yours, since I've already got a friend group, but I used to not interact with them much and be reclusive as well.
I've been a lot happier recently getting involved in their shit talking. Maybe they get a little mean but I know it's not malicious.
