@pirahxcx Look, I can only share my personal experience using both. I have DVD-Rs and CD-Rs that are over 20 years old and they work perfectly, and I've had a couple of hard drives that have failed due to moving, humidity, and computer crashes. So it will depend on how well you take care of them. The point of building a library, in my case, is also to keep these copies separate and off my computer. (part 2 down below

@pirahxcx That way, if one disc breaks, I only lose one piece of material and not a terabyte of data, for example. I've also considered buying a mini-computer and building a mini-server at home. But first I'm going to try DVDs; if the amount of material becomes physically unmanageable, I'll go for the server.

are you burning the media in mpeg2 to play directly from a dvd player, but one movie per disc at 480p, or compressing to h265 and putting like four 1080p movies in the same disc but can only read on pc?

@pirahxcx I'm still investigating, but planning to play them on a PS4, not a traditional DVD player. Since the PS4 supports AVCHD on DVD-R, I'm considering burning one movie per disc as AVCHD/H.264. That way I can keep 1080p while still having a physical disc I can put directly into the console.

I've bought 100 DVD-Rs, 100 disc cases, and 400 CD labels from Amazon. That means there will be about 100 posts about how I'm building my personal archive and what I'm burning onto them. I've already downloaded: the entire season of My So-Called Life (a series that aired and was canceled in 1994), Serial Experiments Lain (both subtitled and dubbed in Spanish), Lilya 4ever (subtitled in English), -- part 1

and a lot of t.A.T.u. TV material (documentaries, reality shows, and series that only aired in Russia). I've only been able to access all of this by downloading via torrent at times; it was never available on streaming services in my region. I'm open to suggestions for what else to download and burn!

I have a conspiracy theory in mind, and my page is going to be mostly about it. I think it will be much more entertaining for those who see it, and more productive for me in a way. I firmly believe that we are going to experience a knowledge crisis in just a few years. Not because knowledge itself will disappear, but because it will be very difficult to access.

The current generation no longer intellectually surpasses the previous one, and everything seems to indicate that this trend is worsening. Added to this is the fact that the market shows no interest in the cultural preservation of humanity, and they go around announcing the end of physical media, leaving it entirely up to them to decide what will happen to all the information stored on servers

(we all know they won't keep it there once it ceases to have commercial value). Just because everything is more available doesn't mean it's preserved. So I'm going to start physically recording all the material that's currently hard to find on streaming services, and as I do, I'll be sharing it on this website. I hope this journey is as enjoyable for you as it is for me.

I haven't been feeling too comfortable posting very personal things lately anyway, and that's what kept me away from this site for so long.

There's also the problem with knowing what information is real and what is fake.

@anamarriemei that's absolutely true. I don't know if in the future people will be able to distinguish between what's computer-generated and what isn't. I'm not worried about generative AI as a technology in itself; what concerns me most is the monopoly held by those who possess it and their objectives.

I find it crazy how Youtube created "topics" for bands they absolutely have no rights, they probably reuploaded from old uploads and scrapped data from accs that are no longer around, and I believe other music platforms do the same, stuff they got no authorization, old projects maybe no one involved is living and people that would have rights are either unaware, uninterested or incapable of claiming them

and for now its great they are available, but I also believe what AI companies are already doing to books they are going to do to all forms of media, fabricate scarcity and make them exclusive sources to their models, and all that is not being commercially exploited is going to be removed from public access, reference footnotes for sources you won't ever have access to
