Are you sure you want to do this?
Will probably have to look into getting a dumbphone once I move out this September. I've been mulling over making the swap for years, but never got around to it because my high school insisted I use a mobile device of some kind for Google Classroom. Horrid...
I can highly recommend it. Maybe I should write an update soon, I think it's been almost a year since I made the switch myself.
And I also don't like it how others keep forcing us to use programs that I would absolutely never use voluntarily.
@literaturegirl I don't actually have a number at all as of now. 3-4 year old iPhone I haven't charged in nearly 3 months while my Blackberry Torch that I have (which actually supports 4G) doesnt have a SIM at all. I will probably stay this way for as long as possible, though will likely go with a Google Pixel which i will then root if I need a new phone.
I'll probably end up getting rid of the several year old phone soon, since I don't even need it anymore and resent Apple. Blackberry I bought to mess around with, so I'm keeping that (plus, if I *really* needed a phone, I could use that as long as the 4G towers stay up). However, I'm just going to stick to my laptop for whatever I need.
Glad people can't ask me to Google things or do other annoying stuff for them as I don't bring a phone with me, I always got pissed when family needed me to take notes, do math, etc in grocery stores and other places.
My current phone is a Google Pixel. It has a good camera, and the battery life is good for recent phones. I think being constantly accessible is really bad for my mental health, though, so a dumbphone would encourage me to spend more time with myself and appreciate the mundane things of life more. I need to relearn how to live in the moment sometimes, which is really sad.
These devices are maliciously designed to be bad for your mental health, so I wouldn't blame yourself too much. Without a doubt, the best thing you can do is avoid them as much as possible.
@literaturegirl At this point, I will never use a "modern" phone again if I don't have to. Computers I can justify because they're useful for many things, but smartphones being designed to addict you + them essentially being overpriced laptops you have to replace every two years now is annoying. Plus, a family member had bought the 3mo dead phone so it didn't hurt my pockets. If I can do everything I want on a laptop
that is from 2014, then I'd rather just use that. It's faster for me anyways, so I have no reason not to. Email, IRC, websites, 3DSPaint/Forums, and video game VCs are all I really need now. Almost not even forums or video-game VCs tho. Only advantage is typing non-Latin alphabet letters being easier since i don't need multiple keyboards, otherwise laptops + touching grass.
Dumbphones seem nice but it just seems difficult in the modern world. Currently I have a Google Pixel with GrapheneOS on it. I only keep a phone to listen to music, take pictures and communicate with friends and family.
