A shadow is the embodiment of an individual's psyche, specifically their sub/unconscious mind. Invisible to the naked eye, each human is born with one (initially just a silhouette of themselves -- blank slate) that structurally morphs over time. Their morphed appearance depends on one's experiences, repressed feelings, personality, and morals.
