Gone are the days when she was one of 20 girls going for the same part, stuck in a room waiting for her name to be called. "I've never been the kind of actress that has gotten a call that's like, we want you in this role. I've never been offered anything outright, which I think has given me a great work ethic. But it's starting, now! I got a call from Garth [Davis, director] the other day, telling me he wants me for this role in his next film. I can't talk about it yet, see, but it's still exciting. Is this how you know you've made it? It's all very surreal, still."
Mulbright doesn't know it yet, but she's about to take home the Golden Globe for best actress. She laughs and fervently shakes her head, gushing about the nominees she's up against; go a step further and tell her she's a shoe in to take home the Academy Award, and she laughs even louder, fixing you with a pointed look: "you're fucking mental if you think anyone other than Cate [Blanchett] is walking out with that. How do you beat a lesbian love story, in this climate? You just don't, I assure you."

Wikipedia
Princess Poppy von Schwarzenberg-Mulbright (born
Poppy Wilhelmina Maria Carolina Anna Prinzessin von Schwarzenberg-Mulbright, on 28 March 1988) is an English-German actress and member of the former German princely House of Schwarzenberg. Her most prominent roles include Kitty in
Anna Karenina (2012) and her Academy Award winning performance as Ma in
Room (2015). She is known professionally as Poppy Mulbright.
early life
Mulbright was born on 28 March 1988 at the Clinique Sainte-Isabelle in Paris, France, while her parents were on holiday. She was christened at the St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk on 12 June 1988. She is the youngest child of English media tycoon Clark Mulbright and his first wife, Princess Josephine von Schwarzenberg. Her twin brother, Nicolas, is ten minutes older than she is. They also have three older siblings; Andrew (b. 1983), Phillip (b. 1984), and Jacqueline (b. 1987). When Mulbright was four years old, her parents divorced, and the children subsequently split their time between Berlin and London, spending the academic year with their father and the summer and holidays with their mother.
Mulbright attended the Francis Holland School for Girls in Central London until she was thirteen, at which time she moved on to the independent Bedales School in Hampshire, England; she participated heavily in both drama departments. She has stated that she was not a "particularly exceptional student; I enjoy reading and learning at my own pace, not one set by educators." She opted not to attend university, though she did take her GCSEs.
Both her parents have since remarried; Clark married Parisian heiress and fashion designer Emmanuelle Comtois in 2010, while Josephine married United States Ambassador to Germany Robert Hobbes in 2007. Mulbright's paternal grandfather was Alexander Mulbright, 11th Duke of Rutland (his eldest son, Guy, currently holds the seat of 12th Duke of Rutland). Her paternal grandmother is Lady Georgina, Duchess of Rutland and a daughter of the Duke of Roxburghe. Her maternal grandfather was Prince Alfred III von Schwarzenberg, an investment banker. Her maternal grandmother was Princess Sophie von Holstein, a jewelry designer and philanthropist. She is the distant cousin of Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, through her mother.
career
Mulbright first worked in the entertainment industry starting in 2006, when she landed a few German fashion ads primarily due to her mother's influence, and appeared regularly in various magazines over the next few years. She did not appear onscreen until 2009, when she starred in
Fish Tank, directed by Andrea Arnold. A casting director working for Arnold spotted Mulbright having an argument with her then-girlfriend in the middle of the British Museum, a fight that turned loud and moderately violent and resulted in the pair being kicked from the museum. The casting director followed her out, asking her to come and audition for the role; she was officially cast two weeks later.
Her first major studio project was in 2010's
The Kids Are Alright, which was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. She saw considerable success over the following years, appearing to much acclaim as Kitty in
Anna Karenina (2012), as Jean in
Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), and in the Academy Award-nominated
The Imitation Game (2014) in a supporting capacity. Mulbright was one of three actresses seriously considered for the part of Cinderella in Disney's live adaptation of the animated classic, but the role ultimately went to Lily James.
In 2014, Mulbright won the role of Ma in Lenny Abrahamson's
Room. She has stated that she was not the original actress that was intended for the role - the girl who was cast eventually had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts, and they had to start the audition process over again; she wrote letters and called Abrahamson's office to convince them to let her come in and read for the part. After weeks of callbacks and chemistry reads, she was given the role on the condition that she submit to random drug tests throughout filming - mostly given her background, despite the fact she had been clean for a year at this point. Of the success of
Room, she has said: "I don't think Lenny [Abrahamson] or I knew just how big it would get. I read the script, I connected with it, and I wanted it - that was all I knew. Never in a million years would I have thought it would've gotten me an Academy Award nomination; Lenny didn't, either." Abrahamson has praised her performance, citing that "she blew me away in the audition. She has this grittiness to her that contrasts so beautifully with her vulnerability; she brought so much dedication to the role, and it was incredibly gratifying to see."
personal life
Mulbright is openly bisexual. From 2004-09, she was in a relationship with Lady Zara, a daughter of the Earl Cadogan that she met while boarding at Bedales, and has not been in a serious relationship since. She has frequently become involved with costars, though she rarely comments on them and has been known to get particularly snippy with interviewers that press the issue.
In late 2009, Mulbright was introduced to As Above So Below frontman Robban Noble. The pair would go on to be involved in an incredibly tumultous on-and-off relationship over the next few years, becoming a favorite fixture in the media due to their penchant for public scuffles. The pair were admitted to Paracelsus Recovery together in 2013, with some tabloids speculating that Noble was the sole reason Mulbright finally agreed to admit herself. Mulbright consistently cites Noble as her best friend, and frequently sings his praises on press tours and promo outings.
Mulbright maintains homes in Berlin, Paris, and London; she lives primarily in Chelsea. She has stated that while she enjoys visiting Los Angeles, she would never be able to live there for a prolonged period of time; "it's too sunny in LA! I need a good rain, it just meshes better with my dark and stormy moods," she joked in an interview with
Vanity Fair in 2014.
media attention
Mulbright has been candid about her struggles with partying and drug abuse, which she has stated began when she was attending boarding school. In 2013, she was admitted to Paracelsus Recovery in Zurich, where she spent eight weeks in treatment for cocaine addiction. In March 2016, Instagram photos of Mulbright at a nightclub in Paris taking what appeared to be cocaine surfaced, sparking speculation that she has since relapsed.
During the 2017 awards season, Mulbright faced considerable scrutiny for her obvious distaste for actor Casey Affleck, who she presented multiple awards to throughout the season. When presenting him with the Golden Globe, she blatantly rolled her eyes as she handed off the award, and she refused to clap after his Academy Award win; at the Vanity Fair after party, she made multiple comments about how "mental" it was that Affleck won the award in spite of his sexual assault claims, citing the treatment of Nate Parker and his similar sexual assault claims as reasons why Affleck should not have been considered. She reportedly called to apologize to him personally. That same night, she made comments about how "undeserving" both
La La Land and Raina Arquette were of their respective awards.
